19 girls’ teams from Development Centers to compete across two action-packed weekends. 

Matches to be hosted across multiple pools in Malerkotla and Jalandhar. 

Mohali, 27 February 2026: In a significant move to boost grassroots women’s sports and nurture emerging talent, Roundglass Hockey Academy (RGHA) is proud to announce the commencement of the ‘Punjab Hockey League – NexGen Girls (5S)’. Staying true to its mission of reviving the sports culture in the region, this fast-paced 5-a-side tournament will witness fierce competition among 19 girls’ teams from various RGHA Development Centers across Punjab. This tournament is a historic milestone as the first-ever girls’ league organized by the Roundglass Hockey Academy. 

The tournament is scheduled to be conducted over two exciting weekends, February 28 to March 1, and March 7 to March 8. To ensure widespread participation and high-octane action, the matches will be hosted concurrently at key venues in Malerkotla and Jalandhar. The 19 participating teams have been drawn into four competitive pools (Pool A, B, C, and D), featuring young, enthusiastic squads from centers including Barnala, Patiala, Malerkotla, Baba Bakala Sahib, and Khalsa College Amritsar, among others. 

‘Empowering the Next Generation of Women in Hockey’: Speaking on the launch of this exciting league, Mr. Rajinder Singh, Technical Lead, Roundglass Hockey Academy, said, “The Punjab Hockey League – NexGen Girls (5S) is a vital platform for our young female athletes to showcase their skills, build confidence, and experience the thrill of competitive match-play. The 5-a-side format is incredibly fast and dynamic, which will significantly sharpen their reflexes, stamina, and on-field decision-making. Our goal is to empower these girls at the grassroots level, providing them with the exposure they need to eventually represent Punjab and India on the global stage.” 

This initiative will see the Roundglass Hockey Academy organise its first-ever league for girls. The format makes it more exciting; it is distinctly different from traditional 11-a-side field hockey, played on a smaller pitch (40m x 23.7m) with boundary boards that keep the ball continuously in play. 5S hockey is significantly faster and more goal-intensive. With fewer players on the field, each athlete gets more touches on the ball, making it an exceptional format for developing foundational skills, agility, and quick reaction times in emerging players.
